The car looks perfectly clean right after washing - but when it's dry, small white rings and spots suddenly appear all over the paint. Water spots are one of the most common problems after car washing, but they're easily avoided with the right technique.
What causes water spots?
Water spots form when water droplets dry on the paint before being wiped off by hand. What's left behind is the minerals and salts that were dissolved in the water - the harder (more mineral-rich) the water, the more visible the spots. The same applies to screen wash or rain water that is allowed to dry without being wiped away.
Step 1: Dry the car manually immediately after washing
The single most important step is never to let the car air-dry in the sun. Dry the whole car manually immediately after rinsing, while the paint is still wet and cool. Use a large, absorbent microfibre cloth or a so-called drying towel (waffle-weave) that can draw off large amounts of water in one sweep without scratching the surface.
- Work from top to bottom, the same order as when washing.
- Fold the cloth often so you're always drying with a relatively dry surface.
- Don't forget gaps, wing mirrors, trim strips and the area around the fuel cap - water that collects there often runs out again later and creates new spots.
Step 2: Avoid washing in strong sunlight
If you wash the car in direct sunlight or on hot paint, the water dries much faster than you can wipe it off by hand, which greatly increases the risk of spots. Choose shade, an overcast day or early morning/evening for the best conditions. Or even better - indoor self-service car wash bays are a very convenient option.
Step 3: A final rinse additive makes a difference
A final rinse step with deionised or purified water, or a spray sealant/wet coat that makes water bead into large, cohesive drops instead of a flat layer, significantly reduces the risk of spots. Large drops dry faster and leave less mineral residue than a thin, spread-out layer of water.
Existing water spots
If water spots have already formed, they can often be removed with a mild paint cleaner or a classic combination of equal parts water and white vinegar, applied with a soft cloth and then rinsed off. For deeper, ingrained spots a light polish may be needed to fully level the surface.
- Always dry the car manually immediately after rinsing - never let it air-dry.
- Use a large, absorbent drying towel for fast and gentle drying.
- Wash in shade or overcast weather to avoid rapid drying.
- Check gaps and trim strips extra carefully - water pooling there often runs out later.
- Finish with a spray sealant that makes water bead into large drops.

Water spots are almost always about timing and technique - the water must be wiped off before it has time to dry by itself. Wash in shade, dry manually with an absorbent towel immediately afterwards and finish with a water-repellent sealant.
